A Conservative councillor’s motion aiming to tackle period poverty has been unanimously approved.
Cllr Heather Williams, Leader of the Conservative Opposition at South Cambridgeshire District Council, put forward the motion at a council meeting on Tuesday 27 February.
Cllr Williams’s motion stated: ‘This Council requests that the Cabinet expands its Cost of Living Support scheme to include providing free sanitary products to those who may not be able to afford them.’
The motion recognises how the council’s response to the cost of living crisis can be broadened to address unspoken daily challenges for ordinary people.
Cllr Williams said:
“Often it is the small changes that can have the biggest impact in an individual’s life. Helping to address period poverty is a very small change in practice at the council that has the potential to support some of the most vulnerable in our society – and show them they have not been forgotten, they are cared for, and we will help them.
“My experience of local government is often that there is a lot of will to create positive change, just not necessarily the awareness of issues like period poverty. The fact that this received unanimous support shows how much this issue goes beyond party politics.”
