Local Conservatives are working with residents to make plans for a new train station at Sawston.
Sawston is one of the few villages in South Cambs to have a railway line – but no station. The London Liverpool Street to Cambridge line runs past the end of Mill Lane.
Anthony Browne, Conservative MP for South Cambs, said “it makes economic sense to add stations to existing lines.”
A station in Sawston would be just two stops to Addenbrooke’s, and three stops from Cambridge city centre. It forms part of a bid to improve public transport links in Cambridge – a move fully support by the South Cambs Conservative group.
The South Cambs Conservative manifesto states that “Sawston, being the largest parish in South Cambs, needs good quality public transport. There is already a railway line, so why not a station?”
Support for a rail station in Sawston is galvanised by hope for improved mobility for residents in South Cambs, as well as the economic benefits from improved work, business and home access.
The Sawston Station Working Group will apply for government funding as part of a £500 million pot to reconnect railway lines across the UK.
