Plans to construct Fulbourn Greenway are one step closer to getting the green light after nearly a decade in the making.
The project was given firm approval at a meeting of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s (GCP) Joint Assembly on Monday – with members emphasising the need for speed.
The final decision will be made by the GCP Board in January 2024.
The creation of a 150km network of sustainable travel corridors for pedestrians and cyclists in Cambridgeshire has long been a priority, with the need to connect villages with the city centre greater than ever.
The Fulbourn Greenway has in particular been delayed by land issues – making its near-approval ever more important.
Cllr Graham Cone (Conservative, Fulbourn and Fen Ditton) expressed his support at the GCP’s albeit delayed progress on starting construction of the Fulbourn Greenway:
"I’m very pleased to see the Fulbourn Greenway given support by the GCP. It will have a huge benefit to the residents of Fulbourn who live not far from Cambridge city centre. It will allow them to get to work and social activities without using the car.
“Given that funding was granted in 2016 for the greenways project, I’m very disappointed that there are still no spades in the ground. I think it is poor that the GCP hasn’t yet delivered any part of the Fulbourn route, so I welcome the decision to recommend its speedy construction.”
With a recent history of failing to deliver on meaningful promises to the residents of Cambridgeshire, the GCP’s eventual decision to start making the greenways project a reality will be welcome news for all.
