The Lib Dem-led administration in South Cambs has been named and shamed on a government league table, showing some of the lowest numbers of actions taken over fly tipping incidents in the UK.
Only one fine for fly tipping was issued by the administration this year – despite over 500 incidents being reported.
South Cambs Lib Dems were the worst performers in Cambridgeshire for taking action on fly tipping. Peterborough City Council acted on 5,779 incidents, making it the most effective in the region.
Despite introducing higher maximum fines for fly tipping of up to £50,000 – and a possible prison sentence – it is clear that South Cambs Lib Dems have failed to take necessary action to protect our communities.
Cllr Heather Williams, Leader of the Conservative group, said:
"These statistics should be shameful to the Lib Dem administration. Fly tipping is a blight on our countryside, and one of the most blatant and important services that the council is responsible for. It should be punished.
"Fly tipping has always been a priority of ours - but these statistics show it is not a priority of the Lib Dems. Perhaps if they had staff working for the 5 days they were being paid for - rather than 4 - they would have the resources to do so. This is yet another potential consequence of the Lib Dem vanity project."
