Transport Secretary Mark Harper has recommended that plans for the Cambridge congestion charge go “back to the drawing board”.
The proposed charge, which would see road users in Cambridge paying £5 per day to drive on the roads, has faced significant backlash.
“The Lib Dems and Labour, who are pushing for these changes, must listen to local residents rather than choosing to pursue an ideological anti-car agenda,” said Mr Harper.
South Cambs Conservatives echoed the views of the government minister, voting against the charge and demanding consultation with residents.
Conservative councillors were also furious that Addenbrooke’s and Papworth were within the proposed charge zone – meaning hospital patients would have to pay to drive to appointments.
