Road charging has been ruled out by the Conservatives’ new backing drivers bill – rebutting remarks by the Lib Dem leader in South Cambridgeshire.
This bill supports Cambridgeshire Conservatives’ fight against the war on motorists with the Cambridge congestion charge and the continued threat of road charging in Cambridgeshire.
The new bill would prevent the introduction of any new taxes for driving on our roads. This would stop new road charges in Cambridgeshire – meaning working people and our most vulnerable would not be charged to get to work, take children to school and visit family.
This clears up assertions by Cambridgeshire Lib Dems that road charging is inevitable. Conservatives are in fact taking necessary action to protect our freedom.
Cllr Heather Williams, Leader of the Conservative Opposition at South Cambridgeshire District Council, said:
“I’m pleased to say that our party is listening to the concerns we’ve been raising for a long time about the anti-motorist mentality that has been adopted by the Lib Dems and Labour who are locally punishing drivers.
“This is not the way to solve our transport problems. All this would do is punish those less well off and force them to stay in older cars that are less environmentally friendly for longer, as they would be financially punished for not being able to afford new electric vehicles.
“We were right to fight the Cambridge congestion charge and we are completely right to continue to campaign against the Lib Dems and Labour’s road charging plans.
“The South Cambs Lib Dem Leader said that it’s inevitable road charging will happen. This document makes it perfectly clear that road charging is not the only path and it is not the Conservative way.”
