South Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats approved plans to build up to 34 affordable new homes in Cottenham – despite environmental and equity concerns.
Conservative councillors raised concerns over flooding, waste management and the impact on the green belt.
Cllr Dr Richard Williams (Conservative, Whittlesford) said approving the plans would be “declaring open season” in the rest of the district, threatening environmental damage.
Meanwhile, Cllr Heather Williams (Conservative, The Mordens) was alarmed by the density of the site which exceeded the council’s policy. Cllr Williams said she did not want to see more houses “crammed in” just because it was affordable housing.
Building more homes in the district’s green belts hinders conservation efforts by displacing wildlife and rural landscapes.
