The Lib Dem leadership at South Cambridgeshire District Council has provided no reassurance to residents concerned about the impact of East West Rail (EWR) on local communities.
The administration was questioned on their efforts to mitigate the impact of EWR in a council meeting in February.
Ominous question marks remain over the chosen route for EWR – which will either continue from Cambourne into northern Cambridge, or carve up further green land in southern Cambridge.
Cllr Dr Richard Williams (Conservative councillor for Whittlesford) asked the Lib Dem Leader Cllr Bridget Smith to confirm her administration would oppose East West Rail’s potential to sever communities.
Cllr Williams also asked what actions the Lib Dems would be taking to mitigate the impact of the new railway line on South Cambridgeshire residents.
Cllr Bridget Smith replied: “Until we have the detail of the route, there’s not that much we can do”.
After the meeting, Cllr Williams expressed his disappointment at the Lib Dem leadership’s failure to reassure South Cambs residents:
“Yet again the Lib Dem administration has failed to stand up for residents. The Council should be unequivocal in its opposition to the damaging proposed route put forward by EWR that will sever links between local communities and blight villages across South Cambs.”
